Reading is More Than Letters and SoundsSure, students need to be able to figure out unknown words to unlock the meaning of words. But what happens when they have become decoding machines, yet struggle to recall details in a text or make connections to themes in a story?
This is the experience I have had with students time and time again. I needed to figure out what instructional practices would positively impact reading comprehension in elementary students? Through coursework, a practicum and action research, I found several practices that deepen students' understanding of what they have read. Discussing reading, teaching reading with writing, using strong oral language during reading and reciprocal teaching are all ways that teachers can help improve reading comprehension in their students. The practices explained on this site can be used to address multiple Common Core State Standards including, but not limited to: Literature Standards: RL.1.1, RL.1.2, R.L. 1.4, R.L.1.9 Informational Text Standards: R.I.1.1, R.I.1.2, R.I. 1.3, R.I. 1.7 |
